Free offers several mobile plans without commitment, but not all meet the same needs when it comes to equipping a teenager. Between the €2 Plan and the Free 5G+ Plan, the price and service gap is wide. The choice depends less on the offer itself than on how it is subscribed and configured, particularly through the connection to a Freebox.

Free Family Connection: the mechanism that determines the price of the teen plan

Most comparisons list Free plans side by side without specifying a crucial point: subscribing from the active Freebox subscriber area activates pricing advantages that do not exist for a line opened independently. The €2 Plan can become free for a Freebox subscriber with the Upgrade 1 Go, and the Free 5G+ Plan benefits from an unlimited data allowance in 4G/5G instead of the standard 350 Go.

A line subscribed separately, even in the name of a minor attached to the household, does not automatically benefit from these conditions. The process goes through the Freebox credentials or the subscriber area of the box holder. Forgetting this step means paying more for less data, with no simple possibility of correction afterward.

Choosing a teen plan with Free therefore involves first checking if the household has a Freebox, then subscribing to the mobile line from the correct client area.

Free €2 Plan for a teen: the concrete limits of out-of-bundle charges

The €2 Plan attracts with its low price. It includes calls and SMS in France, but the data allowance remains very limited. For a teenager who regularly uses social networks or video streaming, this volume runs out quickly.

The main trap: the €2 Plan is not actually blocked. Contrary to what its pricing suggests, it does not automatically cut off the connection once the data allowance is consumed. Out-of-bundle charges can incur additional costs if the blocking is not manually activated from the client area.

For a middle school student whose bill we want to control, checking the out-of-bundle blocking is a step not to be overlooked. This setting is done in the subscriber area, under line management, and not from the teenager’s phone.

When the €2 Plan is sufficient, and when to upgrade

A teenager who primarily uses Wi-Fi at home and school can make do with it. Messaging, some web searches, light browsing: the allowance holds if video streaming in 4G remains occasional.

However, as soon as the teenager spends time commuting, going out, or on vacation (where Wi-Fi is not available), mobile data consumption increases. Short videos on social networks, even just a few seconds each, consume significant volumes cumulatively over a month.

Free parental control: what the plan does not do alone

Free offers a parental control solution with site filtering, app limits, screen time limits, and, depending on the plan, device location. This service is included at no extra cost in certain offers, but parental control is not activated by default upon subscription.

Activation is done from the client area of the line holder. Without this voluntary step, the teenager navigates without any filter as soon as the SIM card is activated.

Parental control coverage depending on the connection mode

A setting made on the Freebox protects devices connected to the home Wi-Fi. As soon as the teenager switches to the 4G or 5G network, Wi-Fi protection no longer applies to the mobile connection. Parental control must be configured at two distinct levels:

  • On the Freebox, for content filtering when the phone is connected to the home Wi-Fi
  • On the mobile line, via the Free client area, for filtering in 4G/5G outside the home
  • On the device itself, via the native settings of the operating system (iOS or Android), to complement the operator’s system

None of these three levels covers all situations on its own. Field feedback varies on the effectiveness of browser filtering: some sites slip through the system, especially via alternative browsers or messaging apps that include an internal browser.

Free 5G+ Plan for teens: a data volume that raises other questions

The Free 5G+ Plan offers 350 Go in mainland France (unlimited for Freebox subscribers), unlimited calls to mobiles and landlines in France, and a data allowance of 35 Go per month while roaming from Europe and the DOM. For a high school student, this is a comfort that eliminates any risk of exceeding data limits.

The question then shifts from budget to usage. An almost unlimited volume of mobile data, without technical safeguards, allows for continuous streaming, massive downloads, and a constant connection to social networks. The plan does not impose a natural limit on screen consumption.

For families who want a framework, the Free 5G+ Plan requires more active parental involvement than the €2 Plan: control will not come from the data allowance (too large to play this role), but from parental control tools and rules set within the household.

Checklist before subscribing to a Free plan for a teenager

Some checks to perform before activation, regardless of the chosen plan:

  • Confirm that the subscription goes through the Freebox subscriber area if the household has one, to activate Free Family pricing advantages
  • Activate out-of-bundle blocking from the client area, especially on the €2 Plan which does not automatically block data
  • Configure parental control on the mobile line (not just on the Freebox) to cover browsing in 4G/5G
  • Complement with the native restrictions of the phone (Screen Time on iOS, Digital Wellbeing on Android) to limit screen time per app

The choice between the €2 Plan and the Free 5G+ Plan depends less on price than on the level of digital autonomy granted to the teenager. Without out-of-bundle blocking and without activated parental control, even the cheapest plan can generate unexpected costs and unfiltered exposure.
